‘Gandhi Jayanti’ is celebrated on the day when Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi popularly known as Gandhiji was born. It was 2nd October, 1869 in Porbander, Gujarat. India celebrates his birthday as the ‘National Holiday’.
He passed his law examination from England and then joined a job of a legal adviser in Durban, South Africa. He lived there for 20 years. During that period Gandhiji felt the pain and insult the Indians were going through in South Africa. This made him realize the condition of the Indians in India under the British regime.
His freedom struggle started in South Africa itself. ‘Satyagraha’, the term means ‘truth’ and ‘firmness’, was coined by him in S. Africa.
In 1915 Gandhiji came back to India and started participating in various freedom movements. Gopal Krishna Gokhale was his political mentor. Gandhiji always advocated the path of ‘satyagraha’ and ‘Non-violence’. His campaigns for India’s Freedom Struggle were: Non co-operation Movement, Civil Disobedience Movement and Quit India Movement. He got arrested on many occasions. His slogans ‘Quit India’ and ‘Do or Die’ were very popular.
It is said that Rabindranath Tagore named him ‘Mahatma’ but some say that general Indians named him so. Though he loved to be addressed as ‘Bapu’, the nickname affectionately given by the people of India.
Mahatma, who led India to freedom on 15th August, 1947 was killed by Nathuram Godse on 30th January, 1948. While he was shot, he uttered ‘Hey Ram!’
The curtain fell on the great patriot and his death anniversary is known as the Martyr’s Day in India.
May we all learn patriotism, truth, non-violence, simplicity, sacrifice and firmness from the ‘Father of the Nation’!
