Leading child rights NGO CRY-Child Rights and You and India ‘s premier educational institute India Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai joined hands to launch a career guidance app for students from underprivileged background.
Abhyuday Helpline Phone No 022-33574589 is a noble service provided by Abhyuday, the social body of IIT Mumbai which was started with a vision to channelize the youth towards India’s social challenges.
The body has an enormous reach to over 20,000 plus students across 250 plus colleges in India. Abhyuday conducts panel discussions, lectures, donation drives and year-long campaigns like Masti ki Paathshala, Career Counselling, competitions like Action Plan and an annual social festival. All these involve participation from youth as well as prominent personalities from all walks of life.
The student body started a ‘Career Counselling Campaign (CCC)’ two years ago to provide career guidance to underprivileged high school students by making them aware of the myriad opportunities and career options that are available to them and the way they can be pursued. The campaign to date has covered over 3000 students.
The idea of the app was conceptualized by Prof Kameswari Chebrolu to make career counselling accessible to common people and connect them to tech-savvy millennials.
The helpline will enable a student of any class to register a query through the helpline number for the specified stream. The query would be resolved by a registered volunteer who has the necessary knowledge and experience of that particular stream.
“The best way to spend your time is by helping others. The app is designed in a way which allows you to help when you are free and another unique point of the app is that it keeps the identity of the helper and the end user hidden. It hence bridges the gap and connects the tech-savvy people to the ones who have the need,” says Prof. Kameshwari Chebrolu, IIT Mumbai.
“As they say, learning is not attained by chance but it must be sought for with ardour and diligence. We believe that given the right direction, passion leads to excellence. We envision an India driven by passionate youth from all sections of the society. This app has far-reaching potential and can be used to reach out to larger number of students. Hence the campaign can be scaled up depending upon the number of volunteers who devote their time and share their knowledge through the same. We aim to reach out to every single student of the nation who lacks access to information, “says Akhilesh Vyas, Coordinator, Abhyuday, IIT Mumbai.
“We are delighted to partner with a prestigious institute like IIT Mumbai for this unique initiative. This app will provide young people with access to much-needed guidance and direction to in choosing the right career. Since its inception CRY has promoted education amongst the underprivileged, and we are hopeful that this app will help in opening up opportunities for youth even beyond that,” says Kreeanne Rabadi, Regional Director, (CRY)-West.
